William Morris Artichoke

look at the next design
This superb design was originally produced by William Morris as an embroidery kit. It could be purchased as an outline on fabric with some of the stitching partially done if required.
Working with wool on linen, one of Morris' clients embroidered eight full size wall-hangings in crewel work; some of these may be seen at the William Morris Gallery, the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge.

The same design worked in silk may be seen at Standen, East Grinstead.

The Artichoke range of kits is based on the Morris embroidery

Beth Russell has adapted three parts of Morris' Artichoke for needlepoint. Each is beautifully printed on strong polished de luxe canvas which is large enough to be made into cushions or chair seats.

Sufficient wool is included in each needlepoint kit to stitch an area approximately 14½x16" (37x40.5cm); more is available from Designers Forum.

The picture opposite is taken from Beth's book William Morris Needlepoint and comes from the William Morris Gallery collection. It shows one of the many Artichoke panels embroidered by Mrs Ada Godman, a truly devoted stitcher, who wrote in her diary in 1877 about her eagerness to start and who was still stitching in 1900 !
