Description

Needlepoint kit for rug or wall hanging

William Morris designed Acanthus & Vine so that he might teach himself to weave. He had always loved tapestries and considered them to be a high art form. He set up a loom in his bedroom at Kelmscott  House and worked on this every day, sometimes for ten hours at a stretch, from 10th of May to the 17th of September 1879. In total it took him 516 hours to complete! His friends humorously referred to this design as 'Cabbage and Vine' and it can still be seen at Kelmscott Manor in Oxfordshire.
