Needlepoint kit for wall hanging
The Chase is inspired by another of John Henry Dearle's tapestry designs for Morris & Co (see Greenery). I marvel at Dearle's ability to depict incredibly realistic animals in thread. I love too the real sense of movement as they chase through the idealised habitat of fresh greenery and pretty flowers.
The picture lifts my spirits in spite of the slightly ominous situation in which the pheasants find themselves; as the sun rises, we can see not just light, but freedom and hope on the horizon. The original drawing is in the Huntington Art Museum in the US and the tapestry with the Whitworth Art Gallery UK.
