Acanthus & Birds rug
Needlepoint kit for rug or wall hanging
The moment I saw the first completed Acanthus & Birds I longed to see a larger version. There were two ways to increase the size and the drama: one was to stitch it on a larger gauge canvas and the other, to repeat the pattern as a mirror image.
You can see the result, I have had it hanging in my work room now for several months and found I have grown more fond of it as the days go by.
It is printed on the same 7/8 to the inch rug canvas as are all my biggest rugs. Comparing it to the first edition of this design, although considerably more than twice the size, it has only twice as many stitches.
It needs to be stitched in cross stitch as that covers this gauge canvas. It also has a practical side in that it distorts far less than tent stitch or basketweave, making the finishing of the completed stitching easier, which is rather more important on a large piece.
