Acanthus & Birds
Needlepoint kit for wall hanging or firescreen
Acanthus & Birds is inspired by an intriguing William Morris drawing, now in the possession of the V&A Museum London. It is thought that he designed it as his first weaving project but later rejected it in favour of Acanthus & Vine. The complexity and number of colours might have been daunting for a first attempt at a new skill, but provides lots of interest and challenges for experienced needlepointers.
I have had great fun converting Morris’ drawing into needlepoint. As many of you who have been following my Design Diary know, it took me a great deal of time to reduce the number of colours, to make this design possible to print on canvas and still be a practical size.
I am delighted with the finished result and cannot decide if it looks better as a wall hanging, framed, a firescreen, or even inset onto a very large square floor cushion.
